My Favourite App(s) - Rob Goodswen

Rob Goodswen   —   28 August 2013   —   Opinion

Tumblr & Twitter logosRecently Simon talked about his favourite app, the increasingly popular BBC iplayer Radio app. I for one won’t be downloading it, as my only use for the radio is the hour long commute to work in which I’ll sit and listen to TalkSport. The need to keep up with the latest music stopped appealing to me when it all started sounding like the same trashy bassline rubbish. Not that I’m bad mouthing the BBC or the app in the slightest, in fact I was in attendance when Manchester based app developers Apadmi scooped the Big Chip award for best mobile project -  for its work with the Beeb.

I figured, considering my reluctance to download the bosses’ favourite app that I should also share my favourite app on the blog, so that he could reciprocate reluctance.

All app’d out

Being the ‘social media guy’ you’d be right in thinking that my favourite app is a social network of some description. Well give yourselves a pat on the back if you thought that, as you’re bang on. Well almost….I thought long and hard about it and decided that my favourite app is…well…ok I have two.

Tumblr and Twitter.

These apps are the reason why my phone charger never gets unplugged. Whilst not glued to my phone at all times you can bet that if I’m looking at it, I’m on one of these two apps. This is partly due to my obsession with all things SM, but mostly because I need to keep up with our clients’ and my own growing community. Previous readers will have heard about my project, but if you haven’t, have a read of my Out of the Frying Pan blog post

Tumblr

The tumblr app is super easy to navigate and due to the fantastically varied mix of blogs I follow, it always provides me with plenty of things to read, look at and most importantly food pictures for me to drool over. Tumblr is where Go Cook Yourself lives, so its where I go to see how my latest recipe is performing, answer any questions posed by followers and keeping count of my ever growing following, currently at 230,000.

Twitter

Twitter is such a big part of my app life that recently I opened up a second twitter account, this means double the tweets and double the battery drain. Twitter is a great way of finding out information on literally anything. Over 24 billion searches are made each day and the majority of those searches will glean results. My most popular search term? ‘HTAFC’ of course. I’m lucky to support such a social savvy football club who are very active and provide us fans with new content most days.  Huddersfield Town should be everyone’s second team. Or first.

Twitter gives us access to a whole range of companies all vying to compete for our engagement, this week we were thrilled to receive several tweets from Pilsbury owned Toaster Strudel. Using the hash tag #strudelart we told them how we wake up in the morning, a cold shower. Following a short wait we received a picture of two rain drops on a toaster strudel. Whilst not an accurate description of a cold shower, in essence it was everything we had suggested.

What’s your favourite app?
