National Apprenticeship Week 2020

Bethan Evans   —   6 February 2020   —   Access News

In honour of #NAW2020, we wanted to celebrate our Access apprentices, both past and present.

Kicking off in 2016, we’ve been putting apprentices through their paces in our web development team to learn the digital ropes. Created in-house, its aim is to take individuals through a comprehensive course to learn the skills needed to become an Access Web Developer. As a Drupal-first agency, this open source knowledge learnt sets them up for a bright future in web development.

Between 12-18 months of training is delivered via senior members of the development team, online courses, peer-to-peer learning, and job role shadowing. Throughout this time they are also trusted with helping out on maintenance and support tickets to put their training into practice, which then progresses through to larger projects and clients. At the end, our apprentices come out the other side as fully fledged Junior Web Developers.

We now have three full time developers that have come through the programme and who are still with us:

Jake Ryan; Adam Moulsdale; Ryan Hayes

A fourth team member is following in their footsteps, and is looking to complete by this summer!

In 2019 we also welcomed for the first time a Digital & Technology Solutions Degree Apprentice. Partnering with Manchester Metropolitan University, this apprenticeship allows an individual to study and earn a Digital & Technology Solutions Degree, while also experiencing working full-time with a salary, plus other benefits of working in a professional environment. In such a fast-paced industry, this combination of earning while you learn is a great way to kick start a digital career.

“I would highly recommend anyone thinking about what to do after Sixth Form or College to consider a Degree Apprenticeship. You get all the advantages of a university course while getting to apply your knowledge daily at work. Access has already given me a great start to my career as a developer. I’m always learning and have had the chance to work on some great clients, all while being continually supported with everything I’m involved in.” Ben Ryder - Current Digital & Technology Solutions Degree Apprentice

With this scheme being such a huge success, we are now looking to add another degree apprentice to our team, you can out more and apply here.
